Welcome to this site devoted to Craigenputtock, one of the most beautiful rural residences in South-West Scotland. This magnificent house was once the matrimonial home of Thomas Carlyle, one of Scotland's most influential authors. Craigenputtock dates back to medieval times and the picturesque surroundings are still as they were then. With its tranquil atmosphere and untamed landscape it was the perfect environment for Carlyle to draw inspiration for some of his best works.
"The wild moorland home" as Carlyle so aptly put it is situated amid seven hundred acres of land and is sixteen miles from Dumfries. I hope you enjoy this website and will get a taste of the true vibrancy of the place and of the incredibly rich Carlyle heritage which continues to fascinate readers around the world.
